Hey friends,
I wanted to talk about something that’s become a big part of my “brand” — my shameless habit of talking to anyone about anything. I’ve always been a little awkward, but this past year I’ve learned to own the awkward, and I want to share a few tips on being confident.
First of all, remember this: as much as you might be worrying about how you appear, everyone else is worrying about their own image. That’s just how people work. If you stumble over your words or say something a little weird, no one’s going to remember it for long — they’re too busy thinking about the stain on their shirt.
Your mistakes tend to stick with you, and only you. In kindergarten, I got a dime mixed up with a nickel in front of second graders (humiliating, right?) and I still remember it. The second grader who laughed at me has probably forgotten about that moment, but it still lingers with me.
In the big picture, one conversation won’t make or break your reputation. And if it does… well, I’d be worried about what you’re saying in those conversations.
If you’re new at school, don’t be afraid to walk up to someone and start talking. And if you’re a returning student, be an ambassador — welcome people in. You never know whose day you might turn around.
