My Strangest Pet Peeves: Top 10 Weird Things I Cannot Stand

I am a generally positive person, but there are somethings that I absolutely cannot deal with. Call me weird, but if you really think about it, these pet peeves are totally valid.

Opening Containers of Refrigerated Dairy
Sour cream, yogurt, cheese, you name it, I am terrified of refrigerated dairy, especially if it has been opened before. I gag when I see the liquid-solid dairy separation, the water on the top, and the mysterious lumps. Worst of all… the chance of mold. On several occasions, I have opened a container of mascarpone and saw a weird, jiggling, green blob. Don’t get me started on my sour cream scares… I can’t.

Measuring Tapes
They’re metal, they snap, they occasionally move unexpectedly. The fact that when I tell people I have a fear of measuring tapes they give me a look is just… unbelievable. Why, oh why, must these awful torture devices exist?! Okay, to be fair, they are useful. My mom is an interior designer, so I have to deal with measuring tapes a lot. No amount of exposure therapy is going to help. Every time I see them, I’m scared all over again.

Fireworks
Yes, I have been hit with a firework. No, it was not fun. And yes, I was more concern about ruining my shirt than the pain in my arm, thank you for asking. Fireworks are a waste of money and my eardrums. Every time they go off I think, I am going to die today. I think this needs no further explanation.

Teenage Boys with Fireworks
I shouldn’t even have to explain.  Advice that will save you: When a teenage boy has an explosive device, run for your life and don’t look back. This is the end of the world.

Breaking Rules
When people break rules, my heart shatters. I believe in order and rules. People should listen to the law. Do not steal stuff, that’s just mean. If we aren’t allowed to bring food into the store, I’m tossing my sandwich into the nearest trashcan or waiting outside. If you are breaking rules, I will silently cry to myself in the corner.

Water
Here’s a controversial one. I do not like swimming, especially in public. I do not like getting my hair wet with unclean water. I do not like the feeling of drowning. I do not like sink water or water that I don’t know the source of. I do not like drinking water at other people’s houses. Rivers, pools, oceans, and lakes are so beautiful to look at, but if I’m higher than my knees in water I will happily leave.

The Sun
Yes, it keeps us alive, but skin cancer is real people. Wear your sunscreen, don’t get weird tan lines, those are the worst. Please. I will never tan because then you end up with age spots and leathery skin.

Cats
I’m really sorry for this one, but I’m extremely allergic to cats and every time I’m around one, I feel like I’m going to die. I’ve never met a nice cat, but I’m sure yours is lovely.
